“The Albula and Bernina lines of the Rhaetian Railway offer one of the most spectacular ways to cross the Alps. A particular high-point of the ride is the panoramic view from the Bernina Express, as it passes mighty glaciers on its descent from Chur to the swaying palms of Tirano. The train makes short work of the 55 Tunnels, 196 bridges and slopes of up to 70 millimetres per metre of incline that are found along its route.”

Your journey starts from Milan, Italy to Chur, Switzerland – 220 kilometers. Chur is not the end of the Bernina Express’s ride. It continues along the Albula route to Engadine, passes Bernina Pass to Valposchiavo, to Brusio and Tirano. The whole journey lasts 12 hours. The cost is $160 per person.

A train that takes you to the European Grand Tour of 1920’s! “The train against which all other luxury trains are measured’ – Vanity Fair.”

Journey starts from London to France, through Kent and the England Channel, to Venice, through the Channel Tunnel and Austria. You enjoy a cup of tea and fine food while the train crosses high Alpine pastures, ascends to the Brenner Pass, which is about 4,500 feet above sea level, and arrives at Santa Lucia Station.

The most interesting is that each carriage has its own story and history:

“Dining Car 4095
‘L’Oriental’ was originally a Pullman kitchen car built in Birmingham in 1927 in the ‘Etoile du Nord’ style. She was shipped from the builders to France and entered the Etoile du Nord. This was an all-Pullman service between Paris and Amsterdam, passing through Brussels, a journey of 350 miles.

Its service finished with the Lusitania Express, which also included car 4110 between 1961 and 1969. When car 4095 was bought for the VSOE the interior was replaced with black lacquer panels that had been in dining car 3583.”

Venice Simplon-Orient-Express operates from March to November. Whole journey takes 2 days and 1 night. Food is exquisite, and cocktail attire is required.

Information to take into consideration: The whole train is non-smoking. None of the cabins contain a shower.
